Blog Or Band?
Now for a little game, something completely useless:
I’ve come across a lot of cool blogs in the past few weeks of my introduction to blogging. In particular, I’ve been struck by how creative and cool-sounding their names were. In true Dave Barry fashion I thought “this would be a good name for a rock band”. So good in fact, that it’s sometimes hard to tell what’s a band and what’s a blog. Thus, a little low-tech quiz- Blog or Band. If you want to, play along. If I have linked to your blog from here, or if you have a blog and are reading this, feel free to put a similar game on your own blog with a few blogs you think have cool names.
This is a list of ten names. Five of them are names of blogs, and five of them are names of bands. Try to guess which is which. Obviously I’ve tried to be a little tricky here, but do your best.
- Cosmic Variance
- Space Odyssey
- How to Win At Life
- Anarchaia
- Stereoid
- The Human Element
- Cradle of Filth
- All About Eve
- Prudence and Madness
- 30 Seconds to Mars
Answers
- Cosmic Variance- Blog. Tagline: “Random Samplings From a Universe of Ideas”
- Space Odyssey- Band. Although song titles like “A Perfect Day” sound suspiciously like titles of blog posts.
- How to Win At Life - Band. Okay, a very small band nobody’s ever heard of. But the name sounds like a blog! Tricked ya!
- Anarchaia - Blog. The world’s first “tumblelog”, actually. Creative format.
- Stereoid - Blog. A blog in part about music, but it still counts.
- The Human Element - Blog. Could definitely be a band, but only if the lead singer was named “Human”.
- Cradle of Filth- Band. This is a well-known band, but the name is bloggish if only because of the swarm of blogs with names like “A wretched hive of scum and villainy”.
- All About Eve - Band. No, this isn’t an excruciatingly long collection of minutiae from every boring day of Eve’s life.
- Prudence and Madness - Blog. Would make a perfect band started by some chick named Prudence.
- 30 Seconds to Mars - Band. Once again, songs titles like “The Story” could have easily been blog posts.
Well, that’s it. How did you do? This was result of just a quick search for random bands I have heard of and a few blogs I occasionally visit. I’m sure there are much better blog names that should be bands out there. Feel free to share in your own posts or the comments.

Cool question. I wonder if you would get more humorous feedback and responses if next time you could let us guess in the comments, and give us the answers the next day.
The overlap is interesting, since both are such creative endeavors.
You can use luckypolls.com with a wordpress.com blog to do surveys.

Thanks for posting on our school blog!
It certainly didn’t break the flow (like I may be doing here).
Good Luck on your blog - I will be reading it on a regular basis…
Cool , i like this.
Galvanized — Blog — (mine, on wordpress.com) in regard to things that stimulate my interest. Also a play on my last name.
And welcome to the wonderful world of blogging. I’m new to it, as well, and am learning a whole new terminology in this cool subculture.
So much to learn!
And congrats on being already at the top on the WordPress blog list today! No small feat.
System of a Down — Band — I thought that was a cool one…as in “system going down.” LOL
Taking Back Sunday — Band — Would also be a cool blog name, as that’s when most people get the time to post. (See, now you’ve got me started…)
Thanks for the welcome galvanized- I’ll be reading your blog :). The top of Wordpress thing was due to a certain Digg effect, and quite fleeting and ephemeral. All the same, it was quite satisfying to see something other than Scobleizer as perpetual top blog. I have actually considered System of a Down earlier, but discarded it as way too popular- I was looking for something a little more difficult to guess.
