Nine Cool Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do With Wikipedia
You probably know Wikipedia as the world’s largest encyclopedia, suitable for research on most any topic. You know you can look up terms, but what you may not know is that Wikipedia features a ton of other information that can do a lot more than help you with that research paper. Wikipedia can also be a:
- TV Episode Guide. Just search for “list of ____ episodes” with the name of the show, and you will see every episode catalogued and summarized, often with trivia and other factoids.
- Cliffs Notes Replacement. Don’t want to read that weighty tome for your literature class? Don’t worry, Wikipedia is on your side. Just type in the name of the book, and you will be presented with a plot summary, themes, symbols, and other in-depth analysis.
- Learning Activities. This is from Wikiversity, a Wikipedia sister site. Whether you are a student wanting extra practice for a difficult subject or a teacher looking for homework assignments or handouts for your students, Wikiversity provides tutorials and worksheets on subjects ranging from AJAX programming to Philosophy. Wikiversity is currently woefully incomplete, but many subject have lengthy, well-written tutorials.
- Stock Images Collection. Need royalty-free stock images for your next web design or desktop publishing project? Turn to Wikimedia Commons, where you can browse images by subject, licence, or author. So if you need, for example, a radioactive Diderot for that big presentation to the investors, you’re all set.
- Music Database. Want to discover new music? Wikipedia has extensive cataloguing of music by genre, making it easy to find similar bands to those you already like.
- Time Capsule. Want to know what people thought of a topic years ago? Wikipedia archives all changes, so simply by clicking on the “history” tab on top of the page and then “Earliest” on the very bottom you can see an article as it was written years ago. Aside from demonstrating the fluid and ever-changing nature of Wikipedia, but also offers a glimpse into how people thought years ago. The value of this technique will increase over the years as Wikipedia gets older.
- Future Planner. Just as it can go backward in time, Wikipedia can also go
backwardforward. Wikipedia has articles stretching far into the next millennium. Want to see what you need to schedule for 2008? How about the World Cup in 2038? And be sure(assuming you’ve reached immortality) to pencil in the unsealing of that time capsule in 8113 AD. - Trend Tracker. Perhaps even more important than what people are searching for on Google or other search engines is what people are researching. This page show the most popular Wikipedia articles. For example, following the Super Bowl, a lot of people went to research Prince, whose search numbers spiked recently. A list of sexual positions, however, remains an all-time favorite. Which brings us to our next and final topic:
- Teacher of Sex Positions. The list is more comprehensive than most books on the topic, complete with pictures. Hell, you can even use Wikipedia to look for porn.
And there you have it. I’ve only scratched the surface of the myriad uses of Wikipedia. It is truly an incredible resource I turn to time and time again. I conclude with this cartoon from xkcd, which pretty much sums everything up:

If you need Credit Cards you can find them at this site.
Wikipedia thus offers an opportunity of free online learning. Even if you are a techno-savvy geek on the verge of starting a web site of your own, you can look up for the perfect website hosting on wikipedia. You will soon come across your required web hosting services. You can also look up ways to increase link popularity. You can make use of the perfect network software. Wikipedia can even provide you with not only sites offering free domain name registration but sites exemplifying various means of creating remote backup as well. It has truly become an-answer-it-all-bigger-than-life Giant.

Lol! I know what you mean. Sometimes when I’m doing research for school stuff, I find myself clicking away, distracted by all those links, and learning about Molly, Taft’s cow who grazed on the White House lawn and supplied the first family with milk.
Thanks a TONNE!!!
Very cool. I didn’t know about the stock image library. That will come in handy.
That images thing is about to be very useful. I may stop procrastinating and go do my research project now.
Interesting! That’d be cool to see updates on this post with more Wikipedia ideas.
i love wikipedia
Err…”Future Planner. Just as it can go backward in time, Wikipedia can also go backward. ” Forward?
Nice post, though. I love Wikipedia too.
I always use Wiki when researching a post. I know I can link to their explanations of things that are tangential to what I’m really writing about, which is usually something juvenile.
Whoops, fixed.
extrapolater, if want to see juvenile, you should see what the most popular outgoing link on this post is.
Great post…I like Wikipedia, too. Just remember, though, not everything posted on that site is the “truth”–of course, it’s still entertaining.
Ha ha, I love the chart. It really describes why Wikipedia is such an evil time-sink. It’s too easy to lose track of what you were trying to find. Oh well, at least it’s educational.
lol so so so true, you can make a game out of, 2 people start on the same article and then see where each other are an hour later.
Great post…I love wikipedia.
thanks for this, now i am never gonna come out alive

Not to diminish the value of Wikipedia Commons as a source for stock images, but other good sources for images are any sites owned and operated by the U.S. Government. All images there are in the public domain.
Great tip, Peter!
And now Robert Scoble is trying to tell us Wiki is broke!
I think Scoble is just mad people don’t link to him enough(hehe).

Thanks for the information and all of the rest of the information that you have provided me with! Is it possible to put you on my Blogroll so that my few readers can be kept up to date as well as I am?
Thank you for considering my request and thanks a lot for the Wiki… info.!

lol that last pic says it all, a trip to wikipedia very rarely ever involves just looking at one article. It could be an advertisement paradise if they put intellitext - that stuff that makes text into links.
As I explained on reddit, a couple of these uses are directly under attack from a faction of Wikipedia editors who have a very strict view of “encyclopedic” material. From the talk page of the Futurama episode list, which was the example given in the article:
“Many or all of the existing individual episode pages for this series appear to fail the notability guidelines for television episodes, and have been tagged accordingly. … Overly long plot summaries should be edited, to a maximum length of approximately ten words per minute of screen time. Trivia should be integrated into the body of the article, or removed if it is not directly relevant. Quotes and images should only be used as part of a critical analysis of the episode. … Otherwise, when these pages come up for review in fourteen days, they may be redirected, merged or deleted.”
Much of the same criticism has been leveled at all sorts of fictional works, especially the “plot summary, themes, symbols, and other in-depth analysis”, which frequently cannot be attributed to a reliable source.
Even the “Future Planner” tip runs afoul of some Wikipedia guidelines. Articles and information for events that can be reasonably be expected to happen in the future, but have not yet been covered by mainstream press, are typically deleted.
If they are in fact royalty free images you can’t use them for free, because that’s not what the term means. Hopefully you mean they’re free stock images.
Following the theme you could look “royalty free” in Wikipedia and you’d find
“Royalty-free describes material (typically graphics such as stock photography and icons, but also sound such as music loop samples) that may be used for profit, without paying royalties. Royalty-free media is usually acquired for a ‘one time only’ fee, although public domain imagery and many works created under a copyleft license are also usable without paying royalties or an initial fee.”
Duh I thought it was just me. Once I was researching on Wikipedia for my school science project. I clicked and went from page to page and in the end I was on the Wet T-shirt contest page (I stumbled on that page after the sexual positions pages)!!

Haha, you forgot to add that roughly about 25% of wiki is incorrect or out of date, especially for stuff like the “learning activities” you mention.
WIkipedia is great. I use it in my own personal searching all the time. I also notice it is more and more the source of reference for college papers. Spending hours on the site is very much a threat due to the amount of interesting info!
Haha, the entire time that I was reading this, I kept saying to myself: “Hey, I’m not the only one!”

Sex positions! Are you kidding! Well, at least it’s informative…
That chart is hilarious. So true. A lot of people don’t trust Wikipedia, but I just figure that these fact-monsters who are posting all of their knowledge up there are probably monitoring each page and making sure that the info stays correct and up-to-date.
