The Secret Futuristic Uber-Google You’ve Never Heard Of
I bet you use Google to search the Internet multiple times every day. Good old reliable Google, which has not changed it main user interface in years. You would think that all of the extremely creative Google engineers would spend some time designing exciting Web 2.0-ish new interfaces for Google, and at the very least posting them in Google Labs for us early adopters to play with. Alas, no such luck. Google Labs has plenty of interesting projects, but no additional features for the core search product. Oh, and by the way, have you heard of this new search engine called SearchMash? It looks pretty advanced, chock-full of Ajax, highlighting Wikipedia results, keyword suggestions and more. And the search results are pretty good, too. What is this wonderful new search engine? A stealth startup? A private venture? No,SearchMash is actually a Google research project so secretive it is not even listed in Google Labs.
According to this interview“SearchMash is an experimental search site operated by Google. The goal of SearchMash is to test innovative user interfaces in order to continually improve the overall search experience for our users.”. Furthermore, “the site does not include Google branding to help us gather more objective data about user response to new interfaces.” Google is deliberately distancing itself from SearchMash so that usersare not biased in their responses as they evaluate SearchMash features. SearchMash is like a secret Alpha version of Future Google. Features that Google engineers may consider putting into the main Google search first debut in SearchMash. Keep your eye on it. Even though the results all come from Google, the SearchMash interface is a bit too cluttered for me to use regularly. But it is still a very interesting experimental toy, and a rare glance into the cutting edge of Google research.

I will keep my good eye on that one.
The scary part of searchmash is the number of times the interface changes, sometimes even a few times in a single day. I do love it though.
I like it, found it after it was featured on Net@Nite. Cool way to find multiple things on one page: blogs, images ect.
Interesting stuff. Thanks for the heads up!
Cool! Never heard of it before =)
Dang skippy! While Google’s been indexing blogs more and more in their general search features, this by far, offers me, the user cross referenced results. Nice find, and thanks for putting it out there to your community!
I’m always up for a secret, futuristic, Uber-Google!

SearchMash is pretty cool. I’m going to have to run with it for a while and see how useful it is.
First time I’ve used it, so thanks for the tip. Initial thought: I like it, and the results are good. Definitely one to watch.
This is the reverse DNS of the site
cw-in-f147.google.com
Looks as a new Google trick. According to me, it might be a spinoff of unused Google technology.

I think your reverse DNS search was a tad bit unnecessary. Take a look at the site’s Terms of Service
very interesting.
on a sidenote its a cheap way of them to conduct a market research via the web.
My view on google is: it’s the most conscienceless company there is.
Innovation is their way to gain community and customers and then they steal their ideas or buy the customers to grow more and gain more. (Come on, Google Groups, give Google more open sourcecode!)
After that it will rule the biggest big brother, virtual “state” ever and control most people from every country against their states by google’s advertisement’s hidden messages or something..
Google is no more a company, it’s a lifestyle.
