We are not alone…never again will anyone ever be alone
Problogger has a group writing project up, and I’m participating. I love group writing projects because they allow a group of bloggers to focus in on a single idea and apply their own unique perspectives to it. The result is a perfect example of how we all have much in common and are also so completely unique. And the fact that it lets me discover new quality blogs is another big plus. The theme is Top 5, and one of the rules is that the post must be somehow relevant to the theme of your blog. Since this blog is about the ways Web 2.0 connects us in new and unprecendented ways, here are the top 5 ways the Internet has changed the way we see other people:
- More than statistics When an Iraqi blogger writes about the carnage he saw firsthand, or a citizen reporter posts photos of hurricane damage, people in faraway places are no longer merely statistics. They come alive with faces,stories, and images.
- Complete Transparency Dishonest politicians and corrupt executives now know nothing can remain hidden from the prying eyes of the Internet crowd. Everything is archived, preserved, catalogued and made searchable, and everything lies transparent to anyone who cares to look.
- Global Businessmen Payment systems like PayPal and commerce sites like Alibaba make commerce fully global, so that trading with your neighbor is just as easy as bargaining with a merchant a world away. We now trade within a single, global market.
- Total Awareness News get posted to blogs and Wikipedia before they hit major news sites. It is now theoretically possible to be aware of everything going on in the world in near real time. It is equally easy to get information about a major presidential election and the local happenings in a tiny village in India. Censorship is rendered obsolete.
- We are not alone And most importantly, we are now never alone. For any hobby, from collecting comic books to sewing to programming, there exist supportive communities with the same interests and a collective pool of wisdom more massive than that of any teacher.

I don’t think you could be any more “on point” with this post. For my senior project, I presented around a half hour presentation on “Blogging.”
Boy! What a lot to cover! I really enjoyed David Kline’s book (Blog!: How the Newest Media Revolution is Changing Politics, Business, and Culture) and used it as a base for the bulk of my presentation.
Blogging hits EVERY aspect of our lives. It’s only going to be a matter of time until the whole world realizes this.
