Selfcasting
I think it’s an unwritten rule that, for the next few days, all blog posts everywhere must have something to do with the iPhone. Techmeme certainly seems to think so. One of the more interesting posts to arise from the iPhone lovefest is a TechCrunch’s analysis of the iPhone line as the harbinger of an eventstreaming revolution, traditional media subverted and replaced by “user generated live media”, recorded, presumably, on some sort of futuristic super-iPhone that is actually capable of recording video.The concept of citizen journalism is nothing new- it has been bandied about since the last century. Now, with newer smartphones(not the iPhone,actual smartphones) allowing live video recording and streaming, and the rise of ubiquitous WiFi and 3G, we will certainly see more amateur video reporting. The question is, will anyone care?
Blogs have long been perceived by some as a threat to traditional print journalism. And, even though the number of blogs has exploded over the past few years, and many bloggers gained the influence normally only granted to journalists as big publications, nytimes.com remains quite popular.
A commenter on TechCrunch remarked “Just being there is not enough for a revolution, the content has to be compelling”. It will be tough for amateur journalists to create content that is on par with what a news station with considerable resources can deliver. Predictably, user-generated video reporting will follow the same path user-generated text reporting(blogging) went- an A-list of citizen reporters will rise to notability, and become “corporate”- and the rest will be lost among the noise. Instead of covering the news, many will be covering what is most important to them- themselves. Selfcasting, if you will. As we’ve seen inthe blog world, real broadcasting and newscasting almost always trumps selfcasting.
Mainstream media doesn’t have too much to fear- as my new favorite Web 2.0 blog notes, the influence of the entire tech blogosphere is miniscule compared to a powerful news organization- and that’s not going to change any time soon.
