This Might Make Me Want to Get an iPhone
Mere days after its release, the iPhone has already been hacked. This is not a full hack, but getting access into the internals of the iPhone’s OS is a huge step forward. I fully expect the iPhone to be completely hacked, and running Linux in a couple month’s time.

Doesn’t iPhone Linux look good?
The main reason I I’m not getting an iPhone is that, while marketed as a universal and revolutionary communicator, it is a very locked-down device. If the OS X installation on the iPhone is broken fully open, and the iPhone runs third-party software, the iPhone could suddenly become an incredibly versatile and powerful device, suitable for gaming, portable media playback, productivity applications, and more. Soon after the PSP was hacked, an incredible variety of software was created for it very quickly. With superior hardware platform of the iPhone, the possibilities are almost limitless.
Apple products are incredibly well designed, hardware-wise(I love my Macbook Pro). But they are often incredibly locked-down and dumbed down. Check out Rockbox for a glimpse of what happens when open source software meets Apple hardware.
And if, for whatever reason, the iPhone remains locked down, at least we have OpenMoko to look forward to. That’s almost the same thing…right?

Alright so the PSP was hacked to run Linux, did that help sales of the device? No. It still runs a far second to Nintendo’s Gameboy. How is Linux on the PSP even practical? How do you interact with the command prompt without a keyboard? Likewise Linux on the iPhone would have to support a touch screen onscreen keyboard to make any kind of sense.
The “Linux on everything” meme really doesn’t make sense most of the time. First and foremost very few people compared to the general public even have the skills to install Linux onto well ANYTHING and those who do don’t have the same needs/desires as non-geeky useres. Then again I fully recognize that you said “This Might Make Me Want To Get an iPhone” and you didn’t apply that to anyone else. Fair enough.
Linux isn’t all command prompts, you know. It does have a GUI.
Unlike desktop Linux, which is a bitch to install, Linux on other hardware, because it only has to support one set of hardware, actually works quite well. Open source on the PSP lets it run NES or Arcade games, for example.
Quite practical. I bet the iPhone could run Playstation games easily if it were hacked.
You have to understand that the reason Iphone is locked-down is pure business strategy. They have a product and they want to profit as much as possible from it by making it incompatible with other software than their own. They probably expect some negotiations with software companies now that their product is popular, and only after this will the user will be able to enjoy the IPhone at it’s full potential.

Ya this should be a great stuff for the iphone mobile. .
Yes I think this would be a great idea. I was not a i phone but I am a hardcore fan of Linux and now this has made me think that I have to consider getting an I phone and atleast see how the whole thing works.
It should be interesting.
UBUNTU on the i-phone would be IMBA!!
Well that would be a major boost for the i phone and I think this would make things more great for i phone users.
I’m still not a great fan of i phone. But linux does sound tempting but nope I guess.
Linux in i phone, to me that would mean a lot more complications. Does that mean we cant play games on an i phone?
