News? There Are No News.
Mashable has an interesting and very meta post today about a phenomenon they call Navel Gaze Sunday- that is, on slow news days bloggers like to write about what they know best- blogging about blogging. Clearly, it’s a very slow news day, because I’m blogging about bloggers blogging about blogging. Ech. This, like many things I write about, if of course indicative of a larger phenomenon- there are no news.
It’s not a slow news day today, it’s a slow news month. Year, maybe. Think about it. If you’re a tech blogger, where do you go for news to write about? TechCrunch? They’re writing about yet another niche social network. And writing about themselves. Engadget has some stuff on those guys defying the laws of physics and creating free energy, but that can only be amusing for so long. Techmeme? Even when it’s not overrun by iPhone hype, it’s still recycling the same big-blog news and not highlighting new content. Digg is all politics. So is reddit. Tailrank alternates between being blank and days behind. Cnet has old news, so does Reuters.
Not to say that Web 2.0 is stagnating. There’s a lot of innovation out there. It’s just in closed beta. Until a new wave of paradigm-shifting, groundbreaking technologies, I am, for the first time in a while, having trouble finding cool stuff to write about. Any suggestions?
