The Next Big Thing is Already Here
The Next Big Thing is most likely already here. It’s just waiting for someone to come along and execute on it. By the Next Big Thing, I mean the next paradigm-shifting Web application, the digital revolution of evolution, the “2.0″, the next killer app for the Web. You know what I’m talking about- Web 2.0 is built upon such explosive applications. Social networking, Peer to Peer, participatory communities like Wikipedia, online video, all of these are Big Things. But they are not at all new. And the Next Big Thing that is undoubtedly right around the corner won’t be either.
The original Internet phone- the InfoGear iPhone, released in 1999
Online radio is nothing new. The Web radio company Broadcast.com, which made founder Mark Cuban a billionaire, was founded in 1992. Now, services like Last.fm, which do the exact same thing, but better, are Big Things.
Online video is nothing new. Five years before YouTube was conceived, everyone knew watching video online was going to be big. But it took YouTube to make watching and sharing video easy, and it became a Big Thing.
So what are some future Next Big Things? Barring some miraculous advances in technology (neural implants, anyone?) the Next Big Thing will be built on existing technology. And I bet you and I both know what that technology is. All we have to do is wait for someone to come along and build a simple and beautiful implementation.
Some Future Big Things:
- Everything over IP. Voice over IP replacing landlines and cell networks. TV over IP replacing broadcasts.
- Everything mobile. Mobile phones taking on more computerlike functions and becoming centers of communication.
- More Wifi/WiMax/ubiquitous connectivity everywhere

Technology driven items that become smaller, cheaper, and faster are always good bets. Especially with the way social networking, IP, etc is really growing at an exponential rate. Whomever can combine the fastest user friendly product, will likely set the standard for everyone to follow.
The wireless spectrum that is being sold off is what is will be based off of, I’m sure. That tech gets tweaked, all of a sudden the biggest ‘pipe’ isn’t a pipe anymore, and it will be available everywhere that there is air.
The thing I find funny with the web 2.0 is whenever someone creates a cool idea, someone will take it.. tweak it and make it a million times better.
my thought on next big thing using open source on the web just like web2.0.
everyone can use the application without any charges…. Performance of it will be able to compare with the current application
Well, considering whole communities and cities are getting wifi networks back home that anyone can use, I think wifi connectivity will be everywhere in the very near future.
I also find myself constantly thinking on what could that next big thing be. A good approach for such thinking is to reason in terms of what problems we have in place that could be solved with current solutions.
yeah when they make media device that allows access any movie, song, music video, etc then i will be more inclined to spend the cheeze on one.
