Web 2.0 Summed Up
This video pretty much summarizes the Web 2.0 phenomenon:
Note that, aside from being of very high quality, it also has all of the elements of a viral video- it’s already got a good deal of views, and expect those views to explode in the days to come.
Oh and yes, I’ve become quite a bit more cynical about Web 2.0 over the past few months. If you want a powerful reality check, go work 14 hour days at a Web 2.0 startup for a few months
I think the biggest problem with Web 2.0 is that most of these companies focus on changing the world/revolutionizing the industry, and not enough time focusing on running a business, which, at least in theory, even a Web 2.0 Internet startup is.
Imagine if someone asked you for a million dollars to start a small department store that doesn’t sell anything or produce any revenue, and whose business plan is to get bought by Wal-Mart.
Add a 2.0 and put it on the Internet, and you’ve got a promising startup.

It is a nice post. the video is a good one. thanks.
I agree with this guy, haha, really a nice video!
what an excellent video! i enjoyed it very much, and yes it does seem like viral material.
But the pattern always repeats itself, and the reality is if you get in and get out at the right times and don’t invest your own money in the show (a.k.a. “The Producers”) you can make alot of money. Besides, it’s not all about making money, its about creating networks of consumers (e.g. eBay isn’t actually a store, it is a place where people can create stores, but they have created their own market). Aside from that, hosting massive freaking ads on your site tends to make you money - the reason these sites make so much money is they are highly consumable and they can host ads.
p.s. this isn’t an excellent video. THIS is an excellent video -

Hehe.
A big mistake people often make is closing down their credit card with a higher limit (the older one) and keeping their newer ones with lower interest rates. Much better to call up your credit card company (the card with the longer history and higher interest rate) and request a lower rate (watch out for the annual fee - if you don’t carry a balance each month you don’t pay interest anyway and the annual fee is in itself interest) than to close your oldest and keep your new.
But you don’t really need to close down accounts anyway unless you have an identity theft problem or a terrible spending habit.
I still think the Web 2. thing has some time left there have been some new startups that have caught on pretty quick. I just think you need to have a new gimmick if you do that you get a winner.
Yes, this video is truly classic. I’m glad they resolved the copyright issues surrounding the pic of Owen.
The video is offline now!
Web 2? Is that a new version of the interweb?
Yup the video is offline…. I think it has something to do with a photo copyright issue that was used in the video… Too bad though…. the video was really amusing.
no more video !!! so what is the web 2.0 all about. i know linky love. so take a look at my blog.
Video does’nt work?
Web 2.0 is a load of cr… if you would like to call a latest design, layout or idea web 2.0 then fine but when people come to me and ask me to design a web 2.0 website for them then… well lol not much more I can say
Hilarious video, but its very true also! I like the bit about babies blogging in their womb.
web2.0 is underutilized
i wonder how long could they hold up since the buzz is long gone now

what a good branding strategy - web2.0
This is in line with your pre-revenue post. You always have to think about how a site might possibly make money. If it cannot generate income to sustain itself it will eventually crash no matter how cool it is. web 2.0 is marketing hookum.
I am actually interested in the Web 2.0 concept. It’s good that you found a good video to explain it to newbies like me. Thanks!
I love that video, it is so catchy and clever and I actually find it really inspiring! Shame the economy is taking rather than booming right now…
video no longer available. :o(
Hmm…. that is really cool. I have heard about it. I was looking for the video. Thinking to find it out but now I don’t need to find. I have got it.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks for that video!
As we shift to more and more Gen Y type media, web 2.0 will take over all the traditional methods. It won’t be long before newspapers, television (traditional tv), and magazines will be old news. The online versions of these are gaining steam rapidly, and their market share doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere. 8 Straight years without a dip.
Web 2.0 is very interesting. It adds interactivity to a site which makes it less boring and more effective IMO. =) Thanks for the info though. Cheers.
I’m glad they resolved the copyright issues surrounding the pic of Owen.
I believe the Web 2.0 is all about getting people closer, even if this is not so obvious to some. If you get poeple closer, believe me, money will start coming, sooner or later.
Web 2.0 is simply a buzzword, but it isn’t about the companies or the startups at all.
The simple definition is the transition from static html files to the use of dynamic programming on the web by utilizing databases.
I agree with you Shantanu. You said it right!
Web 2.0 is kind of a buzz word which implies more social aspects of the internet. People are using social media as a method of marketing. If you ask me, I prefer SEO 1.0 for marketing as I have been finding it to be more effective, for me at least. Thanks for the great article.
Web 2.0 isn’t about reading blogs and sharing warm fuzzies. You’ve still got to throw down a dynamic value proposition, not just another free ebook.
Great video, i think web 2.0 is over emphasised though. I still think its great web design and content that builds community.
Could someone post that video again please. It’s no longer available.
Video is no longer available but we can get good startup from web 2.0 but video will help more if is will available.
I agree, there has to be sustenance to it. Web 2.0 has that late-90’s Internet boom written all over it. The shakedown always hits the guys riding on air. For every youtube, there’s a Riya dot com.
Developers get excited, investors get greedy, but in the end, you’re either making cash or burning cash. How does the line get blurred so easily?
I am struggling with web 2.0.Still trying to get to grips with version 1.
Just like a lot of people who commented, I was looking forward to seeing the video as well. I think Web 2.0 can be an effective tool for anyone — it’s just a matter of leveraging its benefits in the right way, going to the proper channels and crafting powerful marketing messages.
yeah, nice web 2.0 video. today trendy option for web promotion for website.
The only way the famous web2.0 websites, such as facebook will fall, is if a better service comes along. Facebook took over myspace share, because facebook was tremendously better than myspace.
Awesome web 2.0 video. (above) Facebook is rumoured to be worth almost 15 billion.
Just like every other buzz word there will be a lot of growth and then a plunge as the market gets overcrowded (supply higher than demand).
Eventually it will stablize.
Right now it’s in the growth section of the cycle.
I wish I could see the video :/
But I share your feeling about web 2.0
Neat video! Thanks for sharing!

Nice post. I enjoyed the video
nice article, keep up !
Web 2.0 DEFINITELY has more legs. Let me tell you, traditional companies, government are just talking about incorporating this stuff now. Just like people don’t adopt the latest software until all the kinks are out, companies don’t adopt new business models either.
Web 2.0 seems more like a fad for now. Pretty soon someone will come up with something else to get your attention!
Web 2.0 is getting popular now!I think it is just a start.
Cool article, keep ‘em coming!
I can’t see the video…it says to me that is no longer available….
I like your blog, and I like your perspective, good stuff, I will be back. I know what you mean, Web 2.0 is great, but you need to focus on where the money is coming from.
Could you rehost the video on another site?
This video is not working for me either. It sounds like a lot of people were really liking it. I need to find a different place to watch it.

Hey, what happened to the video? Was just about to show it to some friends who keep pushing the “Web 2.0″ stuff. Any mirrors available?
Video doesn’t work?
Good video
Web 2.0 is a living term describing changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web.
This is really nice video and i completely agree with him.
Good video! Thank you for sharing.
