New iPhone Vulnerability Gives Attacker Complete Control

It’s only been weeks since its release, and a security flaw has already been found in the iPhone. Security researchers from Security Evaluators were able to execute an exploit on the iPhone that gave them complete control of the device. Not only were they able to access the filesystem, including contacts, text messages, and more, but they also had control of the iPhone’s hardware and could make the phone vibrate, for example. The exploit can be delivered through a malicious web page, or a compromised wireless access point, meaning hundreds of thousands of iPhones are at risk.

The security researchers are not releasing any details of the exploit until August 2, to give Apple time to produce a fix. However, it is very unlikely that every iPhone user will apply the patch by then. Read more »

I think it’s an unwritten rule that, for the next few days, all blog posts everywhere must have something to do with the iPhone. Techmeme certainly seems to think so. One of the more interesting posts to arise from the iPhone lovefest is a TechCrunch’s analysis of the iPhone line as the harbinger of an eventstreaming revolution, traditional media subverted and replaced by “user generated live media”, recorded, presumably, on some sort of futuristic super-iPhone that is actually capable of recording video. There has been so much hype around the iPhone that I, like Dvorak, just want to say Shut Up Already. Regardless of your opinion of the iPhone(I think it’s completely overhyped) there’s no denying that, for the smartphone-starved American market(no US carrier has picked up recent comparable smartphones like the N95 ),the iPhone is something quite different and revolutionary.
